Harness the Power of the Wind from the Road to charge Your car

Significant amounts of energy can be generated by capturing a proportion of the energy used on the roads at very low cost, which can be used for EV charging points (at nearest services), CCTVs/traffic monitoring systems and to light-up roads/homes.
This Industrial Research project will allow UK SME AirPlus Renewables Limited to develop a game-changing, compact horizontal wind turbine, allowing energy to be harnessed from both naturally occurring wind (on top of high-rise buildings) and from airflow generated by motorway traffic.

Our Innovative Project

Our ultra-efficient, ultra-compact 5kW, 1m-long design allows horizontal turbines to be oriented parallel to the ground, without the motion being cancelled from gusts in both directions, producing power at significantly lower air speed than existing solutions
By orienting our horizontal wind turbine parallel to the ground whilst maintaining rotation, we can locate generators on both sides of the turbine, resulting in a significant increase in power generation and allowing continuous urban deployment.

Our Innovative Project

Our ultra-efficient, ultra-compact 10kW, 1m-long design allows horizontal turbines to be oriented parallel to the ground, without the motion being cancelled from gusts in both directions, producing power at significantly lower air speed than existing solutions

AirPlus’ business plan

AirPlus’ business plan focuses on targeting road networks and high-rise buildings, delivering to energy end-users, highway providers, and local authorities/councils/public organisations. Initial Route-to-market is with high-rise building installations for robust data collection followed by energy companies for road installations.

The Scalable Design

This project will allow us to scale our design from proof-of-concept and produce working prototypes to be tested in representative environments, with an aim to deploy our turbines over 10% of UK busiest motorways by Y5 post-project.

Benefit to Society

Our solution will help the UK achieve Net-Zero 2050 by providing the wind turbine industry with more efficient wind turbines and encouraging planners to be carbon-neutral and use energy-efficient technology where possible.

Significant market size

Global wind turbine market $53.4 bn.
Projected to reach $98.4 bn by 2030; CAGR 6.3% (Allied Market Research)
Small wind turbine market is estimated to reach $2.54 bn by 2030; CAGR 9.2% (Grand-View Research).
AirPlus is not seeking to take energy sources from current providers/solution but will add an additional level of power generation.

FAQ

What is the concept and design of AirPlus Renewables Limited?

AirPlus’ patented innovation is a concept and design of wind turbines that will take the technology from large-scale wind farms that are currently operational, to a solution that can be widely deployed globally within existing urban infrastructure and harness energy from previously inaccessible sources such as urban multi-storey building environments, airflow caused due to traffic at/near point of use.

What are the limitations of existing wind turbine designs?
Existing wind turbine designs focus on large-scale solutions, simply miniaturising their formats without redesigning the blades of overall structure, and their orientations only facilitate running a single generator, therefore limiting energy production.
How does our design of wind turbines differ from the current technology?
Our innovation is radically different – by orienting the horizontal wind turbine parallel to the ground whilst maintaining rotation, we can locate generators on both sides of the turbine, resulting in a significant increase in power generation and allowing continuous urban deployment.
How would our technology benefit the society?
With a projected 50% energy use increase by 2050, deployment needs to be rapid and streamlined to ensure clean, efficient energy. Our solution will address this priority and help the UK achieve Net-Zero 2050 by providing the wind turbine industry with more efficient wind turbines and encouraging planners to be carbon-neutral and use energy-efficient technology where possible. This will set an environmentally-friendly precedent for other renewable energy and related industries, alongside the wider UK.
